Camping Holidays in the EU27

In 2008, there were 26 000 campsites in the EU27 with an estimated total of around 10 million bed places. Since 2000, the number of nights spent on campsites in the EU27 has remained relatively stable and amounted to 354 million nights in 2008. Nights spent on campsites represented 15% of all nights spent in collective tourist accommodation establishments.

These figures come from a publication from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, on camping holidays in the EU in 2008.

France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands accounted for more than 80% of all bed places

Among the Member States, the highest number of bed places on campsites in 2008 were recorded in France (3.7 million bed places), Italy (1.4 mn), the United Kingdom (1.1 mn in 2007), Germany and Spain (both 0.8 mn) and the Netherlands (0.7 mn). These Member States together accounted for more than 80% of all bed places available on campsites in the EU27.

Denmark, Luxembourg, France and Sweden: more than 30% of all nights spent in tourist accommodation were on campsites

Large differences in the number of nights spent on campsites in 2008 existed between the Member States. In France 99 mn nights were spent on campsites, followed by 65 mn in Italy, 61 mn in the United Kingdom (in 2007), 31 mn in Spain, 23 mn in Germany and 19 mn in the Netherlands. These Member States together accounted for more than 80% of all nights spent on campsites in the EU27 in 2008.

The number of nights spent on campsites in 2008 as a share of nights spent in all collective tourist accommodation was highest in Denmark (43%), followed by Luxembourg and France (both 33%) and Sweden (31%), and lowest in Cyprus (0.1%), Bulgaria (0.4%) and Poland (1.0%).
