Euro Area Investment Fund Statistics in January 2010

In January 2010, the amount outstanding of shares/units issued by euro area investment funds other than money market funds was higher than in December 2009. This increase was due to net issues of shares/units, which was partly offset by decreases in share/unit prices.

The amount outstanding of shares/units issued by euro area investment funds other than money market funds increased to EUR 4,981 billion in January 2010, from EUR 4,959 billion in December 20091. Over the same period, the amount outstanding of shares/units issued by euro area money market funds increased to EUR 1,215 billion from EUR 1,202 billion.

The transactions in shares/units issued by euro area investment funds other than money market funds amounted to EUR 55 billion in January 2010, while the transactions in shares/units issued by money market funds amounted to EUR 5 billion.

The annual growth rate of shares/units issued by euro area investment funds other than money market funds, calculated on the basis of transactions, was 9.5% in January 2010. For the same period, the annual growth rate of shares/units issued by euro area money market funds was -5.9%.

In terms of the breakdown by investment policy, the annual growth rate of shares/units issued by bond funds was 12.1% in January 2010. The transactions in shares/units issued by bond funds amounted
to EUR 16 billion in January 2010. The respective annual growth rate and transactions of equity funds were 15.3% and EUR 8 billion. For mixed funds the corresponding amounts were 2.8% and EUR 11
billion.
