Industrial New Orders Up by 2.7% in Euro Area in November 2007

The euro area (EA13) industrial new orders index grew by 2.7% in November 2007 compared with October 2007. The index grew by 2.5% in October. EU271 new orders increased by 1.9% in November 2007 after a rise of 5.5% in October3. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4 industrial new orders gained 0.6% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU27 in November 2007.

In November 2007 compared with November 2006, industrial new orders increased by 11.9% in the euro area and by 15.7% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment grew by 6.6% in the euro area and by 8.1% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In November 2007 compared with October 2007, new orders for transport equipment increased by 7.3% in the euro area and by 3.4% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products rose by 5.8% and 3.0% respectively. Chemicals & chemical products gained 2.7% in the euro area and 2.2% in the EU27. Electrical & electronical equipment fell by 0.7% in the euro area, but grew by 1.2% in the EU27. Manufacturing of textiles & textile products declined by 0.9% and 0.6% respectively. Machinery and equipment decreased by 2.2% in the euro area and by 2.7% in the EU27.

In November 2007, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in eight, fell in nine and remained stable in Spain and Romania. The highest increases were recorded in Portugal (+5.5%), Germany (+5.1%) and Italy (+3.4%), and the largest decreases in Latvia (-12.9%), Ireland
(-10.4%), and the Czech Republic (-10.3%).

Annual changes

In November 2007 compared with November 2006, new orders for transport equipment increased by 28.7% in the euro area and by 41.2% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products grew by 10.1% and 7.6% respectively. Machinery & equipment gained 9.2% in the euro area and 8.1% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products rose by 8.5% and 9.7% respectively. Electrical & electronic equipment increased by 3.0% in the euro area and by 6.3% in the EU27. Textiles & textile products remained stable in the euro area and grew by 2.2% in the EU27.

In November 2007, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in seventeen and fell only in Latvia (-34.6%) and the Netherlands (-1.0%). The highest increases were registered in Poland (+46.1%), Romania (+23.2%), Lithuania (+21.5%) and Denmark (+20.6%).
