Industrial Producer Prices up by 0.1% in Euro Area in October 2011

In October 2011 compared with September 2011, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27. In September prices increased by 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. In October 2011 compared with October 2010, industrial producer prices gained 5.5% in the euro area and 6.4% in the EU27.

Monthly comparison

In October 2011, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector decreased by 0.1% in both the euro area and the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 0.8% in both zones. Durable consumer goods gained 0.1% in the euro area and 0.3% in the EU27. In both zones, non-durable consumer goods gained 0.2% and capital goods 0.1%. Intermediate goods fell by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Hungary (+1.3%), France (+0.5%), Slovakia and the United Kingdom (both +0.4%), and the largest decreases in Denmark (-0.7%), Ireland (-0.6%) and Belgium (-0.5%).

Annual comparison

In October 2011 compared with October 2010, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 3.2% in the euro area and by 3.5% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector gained 12.4% and 13.9% respectively. Intermediate goods rose by 4.2% in the euro area and by 4.4% in the EU27. Non-durable consumer goods increased by 3.5% and 4.1% respectively. Durable consumer goods gained 2.5% in both zones. Capital goods rose by 1.5% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU27.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total index were observed in the United Kingdom (+11.7%), Lithuania (+11.4%) and Latvia (+9.8%), and the smallest in Malta (+0.8%) and Slovakia (+3.0%). The only decrease was recorded in Sweden (-0.7%).
