Volume of Retail Trade Down by 0.7% in Euro Area in September 2011

In September 2011, compared with August 2011, the volume of retail trade fell by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.3% in the EU27. In August retail trade rose by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27. In September 2011, compared with September 2010, the retail sales index decreased by 1.5% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU27.

Monthly comparison

In September 2011, compared with August 2011, “Food, drinks and tobacco” remained unchanged in the euro area and rose by 0.1% in the EU27. The non food sector fell by 0.8% and 0.9% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade fell in eleven, remained stable in Estonia and Lithuania and rose in eight. The highest decreases were observed in Portugal (-3.7%), Slovenia (-2.1%) and Spain (-1.7%), and the largest increases in Poland (+2.4%), the United Kingdom (+1.0%) and Latvia (+0.9%).

Annual comparison

In September 2011, compared with September 2010, “Food, drinks and tobacco” fell by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU27. The non food sector decreased by 1.9% and 0.8% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade fell in eleven and rose in ten. The highest decreases were observed in Malta (-7.5%), Portugal (-6.2%) and Spain (-5.8%), and the largest increases in Lithuania (+10.6%), Luxembourg (+8.3%) and Latvia (+8.1%).
