MEPs Aim To Keep Duty Free Shopping At Land Borders And Regional Airports

Parliament says duty free shopping at regional airports and at EU-external land borders should still be possible. This position was part of a vote that on Commission plans to update the rules on excise duties. Other amendments set out when can travellers have access to duty free shops, and whether there should there be guidelines for the amount of alcohol and tobacco citizens can take across borders.

Tackling The Pay Gap Between Men And Women

The European Parliament adopted a legislative initiative report recommending a revision of existing legislation on equal pay. In the European Union, women earn on average 15% less and up to 25 % less in the private sector. In spite of the legislation in force for more than thirty years, the pay gap between women and men has been persistent, still varying between 4 and 25 % among the Member States with no narrowing trend.

In 2006, about three million foreign immigrants settled in a country in the EU27. These immigrants can be divided into two groups based on their citizenship: citizens of EU27 Member states (1.2 million persons) and non-EU27 citizens (1.8 million).

Sponsored by AMD, in conjunction with independent research company, YouGov, 77% of respondents said they could not live without daily access to the internet.

Euro Area Securities Issues Statistics: September 2008

The annual growth rate of the outstanding amount of debt securities issued by euro area residents decreased from 7.8% in August 2008 to 7.1% in September. For the outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents, the annual growth rate was 0.8% in September 2008, the same as in August.

European Summit on the Equality of Men and Women in Working Life

On 13 and 14 November the French Presidency of the European Union organised a conference in Lille on the equality of men and women in working life. At the same time, an informal meeting of ministers responsible for equal opportunities is being held to discuss the pay gap and making use at European level of good business practices.

Euro Area External Trade Deficit 5.6 bn Euro

The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in September 2008 gave a 5.6 bn euro deficit, compared with +2.9 bn in September 2007. The August 2008 balance was -9.4 bn, compared with +1.1 bn in August 2007. In September 2008 compared with August 2008, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 2.2% and imports by 2.1%.

The conference "Use and control of EU structural funds" follows the publication, on Monday 10 November, of the annual report of the European Court of Auditors, which encouraged the Commission to continue in its efforts to help Member States address weaknesses in management and control systems for the Structural Funds.
