The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.8% in November 2012, up from 11.7% in October. The EU27 unemployment rate was 10.7% in November 2012, stable compared with October. In both zones, rates have risen markedly compared with November 2011, when they were 10.6% and 10.0% respectively. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In November 2012 compared with October 2012, the volume of retail trade rose by 0.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In October retail trade fell by 0.7% in both zones. In November 2012, compared with November 2011, the retail sales index dropped by 2.6% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU27.

In November 2012, compared with October 2012, the industrial producer price index fell by 0.2% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In October prices rose by 0.1% in both zones. In November 2012 compared with November 2011, industrial producer prices gained 2.1% in the euro area and 1.9% in the EU27.

The proportion of low-wage earners among employees amounted to 17.0% in 2010 in the EU27. This proportion varied significantly between Member States, with the highest percentages observed in Latvia (27.8%), Lithuania (27.2%), Romania (25.6%), Poland (24.2%) and Estonia (23.8%), and the lowest in Sweden (2.5%), Finland (5.9%), France (6.1%), Belgium (6.4%) and Denmark (7.7%).

Following a sharp fall in 2009, EU27 international trade in goods with Russia recovered in 2010 and 2011. EU27 exports to Russia fell from 105 billion euro in 2008 to 66 bn in 2009, then rose to 86 bn in 2010 and 108 bn in 2011. Imports decreased from 178 bn in 2008 to 118 bn in 2009, then increased to 161 bn in 2010 and 199 bn in 2011. As a result, the EU27 trade deficit with Russia rose from 52 bn in 2009 to 75 bn in 2010 and 91 bn in 2011.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 1.6% in the euro area (EA17), while it rose by 1.6% in the EU272 in October 2012, compared with the previous month, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In September 2012, production decreased by 1.3% and 1.6% respectively. Compared with October 2011, production in October 2012 dropped by 4.1% in the euro area and by 4.4% in the EU27.

Internet access and use is widespread amongst the EU population. In the EU27, more than three quarters of households had access to the internet in 2012, compared with just under half in 2006. The proportion of households who have a broadband internet connection has increased more significantly. In 2012, 72% of EU27 households had access to the internet via a broadband connection, compared with 30% in 2006.

Hourly labour costs in the euro area (EA17) rose by 2.0% in the year up to the third quarter of 2012, compared with 1.9% for the second quarter of 2012. In the EU27, the annual rise was 1.9% up to the third quarter of 2012, the same as the previous quarter. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in October 2012 gave a 10.2 bn euro surplus, compared with -0.7 bn in October 2011. The September 2012 balance was +9.5 bn, compared with +0.8 bn in September 2011. In October 2012 compared with September 2012, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 1.4% while imports increased by 0.6%.
