The EU27 external current account recorded a deficit of 6.8 billion euro in the second quarter of 2012, compared with a deficit of 28.3 bn in the second quarter of 2011, according to a second estimate released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27 in August 2012, compared with the previous month, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2012, production increased by 0.1% in the euro area and decreased by 0.1% in the EU27. Compared with August 2011, production in August 2012 dropped by 5.5% in the euro area and by 6.8% in the EU27.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in August 2012 gave a 6.6 bn euro surplus, compared with -5.7 bn in August 2011. The July 2012 balance was +14.7 bn, compared with +2.1 bn in July 2011. In August 2012 compared with July 2012, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 3.7% and imports by 2.1%. These data are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In August 2012 compared with July 2012, seasonally adjusted industrial production grew by 0.6% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.3% in the EU27, according to estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July production increased by 0.6% and 1.0% respectively. In August 2012 compared with August 2011, industrial production dropped by 2.9% in the euro area and by 1.8%

According to the latest Labour Force Survey, almost 70% of employed persons (which includes both employees and self-employed) in the EU27 worked within the service sector in 2011, compared with 62% in 2000. Market services, such as trade, transportation, financial activities etc. accounted for 39% of persons employed in 2011, while mainly non-market services, such as public administration, education, health etc. accounted for 30%. The industry and construction sector accounted for 25% and agriculture for 5%.

In August 2012 compared with July 2012, the volume of retail trade rose by 0.1% in the euro area (EA17) and fell by 0.1% in the EU272. In July retail trade increased by 0.1% and 0.2% respectively. In August 2012, compared with August 2011, the retail sales index fell by 1.3% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27.

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.4% in August 2012, stable compared with July. The EU27 unemployment rate was 10.5% in August 2012, also stable compared with July. In both zones, rates have risen compared with August 2011, when they were 10.2% and 9.7% respectively.
